People Who Achieved Success Late in Life
77
It is old age rather than death that is to be contrasted with life. Old age is a parody of life, whereas death transforms life into a destiny. In a way, death preserves life by giving it the absolute dimension--"As unto himself eternity changes him at last". Death does away with time.
Never Too Old To Succeed in Life Quotes
Forty is the old age of youth, fifty is the youth of old age ~ Hosea Ballou
Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made.
~ Robert Browning
I truly believe that age, if you're healthy -- age is just a number.
~ Hugh Hefner

And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain,
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain.
I’ve lived a life that’s full, I traveled each and ev’ry highway,
And more, much more than this. I did it my way.
~ Frank Sinatra, My Way
Old Age (Haiku)
The sun is shinning
merry go round at the park
granddaughter laughing
A twisted ankle
old man doing ballroom dance
no more cha cha cha
Alzheimer's disease
car waiting, angry horn blares
grocery list, lost
Sitting in the park
old couple watch the sun set
a pair of love birds
Old woman stares out
through a window,world looks in
children not coming
Pearly gates open
the old geezer bids his time
a mule, hems and haws
There is only one solution if old age is not to be an absurd parody of our former life, and that is to go on pursuing ends that give our existence meaning - Devotion to individuals, to groups or to causes, social, political, intellectual or creative work - One's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love,friendship,indignation,compassion.. - Simone De Beauvoir, "The Coming of Age"
ACHIEVING SUCCESS LATE IN LIFE

Grandma Moses (Anna Mary Robertson Moses)
Was a renowned American folk artist.Grandma Moses first came to public attention in 1940, at the age of 80. She painted in a natural way, drawing from her memory and capturing American rural life
Grandma Moses viewed her art as something she enjoyed doing, not understanding why people paid such high prices for her pictures.Paintings which she first sold for about $5 later were sold for $8,000 to $10,000. In November 2006, her work "Sugaring Off", became her highest selling work at $1.2 million. Enjoying phenomenal success, she was honored by presidents and governors.Several books have been written about her. A "Grandma Moses Day was proclaimed in New York and she appeared on the cover of Time and Life magazines and on millions of greeting cards.. A U.S. commemorative stamp was issued in her honor in 1969.She lived to be 101 and in the last year of her life painted twenty-five pictures

Old age is still amazing to me. I am entering it and the wonder of it is simply stunning. It feels to me like starting a new life over all together. It has a life of it's own, style, character and grace. Not to much disturbs me anymore, I take life one day at a time knowing there is not a dam thing I can do about life changing events other than to watch them go by. I know my memory will start to go and eventually I to will forget to pull up my zipper, now that's scary:0) Thanks for the great read SilentReed you chose some brilliant people to highlight here. Peace
Such great inspirations. I'm a late bloomer myself, and believe strongly in trying new things. Making mistakes is simply a stepping stone to success, and part of the path of finding happiness in life.
This is a terrific hub! I'd love to be doing a Master's degree in my 90s. Learning is what keeps the mind not only well occupied, but open. Thank you! I feel like a kid now :)
This is a good reminder to not let life pass you by. Great examples here.
Old age - whatever that is - surely must be a state of mind when mind loses its grip on being a state of life! I find each year a new challenge, beginning & adventure. Of course I was almost literally born once again at age 40 when I reclaimed my remains, learned to drive, even learned to drink (well - not that it's so great but most people learn it in their teens & 20s! - LOL. I always had mastery of written words but it was then I found my voice and overcame most of my shyness and stage fright. I regained my courage, too.
So looking at it from that landmark, I'm '30-something' now - haha.
But it wouldn't matter - how one feels and performs sets the only limits! The passage of years simply supply more material to work with!! :-)
If anything - timelessness begins as soon as one realizes there are no real limits.
Amazing hub. I just loved it and fall in love with your hub. Old age is perhaps the best time to experience what life is really like. Great.
This is more then good it is brilliant. You did pick a wonderful subject to write about and most beautiful people to write about within it. I so enjoyed this write of yours. Thank you! :D
"What will I do with the rest of my life?" Been asking that same question again and again, until I found this hub. Old age never gives me fears, because sooner or later, it will catch me even if I keep on running away from it. So I just walk in happy strides and try to age gracefully mulling over my past and hopeful still of the future. This hub gives me inspiration to be so. Thank you.
There is great wisdom in our seniors once we slow long enough to listen. We are blessed today to be able to tap into this resource.
Blessings and Hugs
I love this hub! What a great idea. What's funny is I've had to slow way down at the ripe age of 35, because of my Rheumatoid Arthritis. Although, it hasn't been a bad thing. Sometimes I curse getting "older", but mostly I've adapted and learned to push myself more, from within, and take up different hobbies. I am lucky to enjoy and view life as a senior, but still be in my youth. The irony is we live in a society that wants to look younger and discover the fountain of youth, but that's just like trying to cheat death- it is going to happen. This hub shows getting older isn;t about laying over and giving up then dying. The older people you featured did the opposite- what inspiration!
I just read silvergenes hub on it and i am taking her great advice.thanks again.
This si a brilliant hub and I was gripped from the word go!! Thank you so much for sharing and I cannot wait to read some more of you work. take care SilentReed.
Great hub.
Grandma Moses lived about an hour from my home when I when I was a child. My mother admired her work and spoke of her often.
George Burns has always been one of my favorite people. He and Gracie had a wonderful television show I enjoyed in the 50's, and he was "a trooper" his entire life.
I am about to turn 61 in about a week and hope participating in hubpages is something I'll be doing about 40 years from now!
BTW, your poems were worthy of a hub of their own...each saying so much with so little.
Well done.

What an empowering article! These wonderful human beings have proved that its will NEVER be too late to pursue your dreams. I recently wrote a hub about v inspiring lady by the name of Ernestine Shepherd who totally blew me away with her dedication and discipline.
These types of people are my roles models. Sooo glad I found this post. Fantastic hub! :)
Out of everything I could have picked of yours to read this is PERFECT! I am having a hard time facing getting older and I do not know how to do it gracefully for my heart is still 18!I am facing age discrimination lookiing for a job and here you have proved that age does not stop learning and doing. I wish young people knew this.
Well SilentReed, this hub certainly gave me a much needed kick in the pants! While I haven't reached my senior years, I admittedly feel at times that there can't be more in store for me, beyond what I'm doing, which at most times is nothing! Thank you for the reminder that...IT AIN"T OVER TIL' IT'S OVER!!!
You're very kind! ;D
What an astute hub! The later in life one experiences success the better the person is able to handle it properly. With age comes experience and wisdom and the ability to really appreciate the success you have achieved. My credo is "it's never too late." It's never too late to do anything in life you want to do. "There is always tomorrow." "Great things happen to those who wait."
We live in a reality show world and everyone thinks fame and fortune have to happen now and in a hurry. It doesn't. It is better savored the latter it comes.
This is a terrific hub! Now I'm all fired up again. Sometimes it seems as if there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done but then I have to get off the hamster wheel and get my priorities straight. I'd like to paint again if for no other reason than to experience the pure joy of colour and creation. Thank you for the reminder!
